Limestone Hall Staircase
Oak treads and black steel details against local limestone, in a house that celebrates Baltic light.
The Story
Tallinn's old town is built from limestone, and the owners wanted their new house to remember that — without imitating it.
The entrance hall gave us a full-height limestone wall and cold, precise northern light.
Floating oak treads warm the stone. Their fixings are expressed in blackened steel — small, honest details that repeat through the house in handles and frames.
Glass panels keep the hall open; their clamps pick up the same black steel language.
The result is a staircase that feels inevitable, as if the house had been designed around it. In truth, it was.

Design Decisions
Why limestone
It is the stone of the city. Bringing it inside ties a contemporary house to seven centuries of Tallinn building.
Why expressed fixings
Hiding every bolt would have felt dishonest next to stone. The black steel details say how the stair works.
Why integrated LED
Baltic winters are long. A low warm light under the treads keeps the hall welcoming through the dark months.
